i am on tresiba and humalog. tresiba has basically saved my life. levemir never worked for me. my question is this. i'll be on medicare soon and these drugs are way too expensive. is there an alternative that works the same but cheaper?

Not any : cheaper alternatives, however contacting the companies and prescription assistance programs, can sometimes be helpful, at receiving medications at a reduced cost. Also ask your doctor as other options could exist for your specific case.

i have a little bit of insulin left over in my humalog vial and my emergency ration novolin r. can i mix the two since they are both fast acting insulins???? i am on a medtronic insulin pump

Don't mix insulins: Unfortunately the insulins are somewhat different in how fast they take effect and how long they last for. Insulin is already tricky enough to dose, but mixing insulins would make this much trickier and if you get it wrong, you can end up becoming hypoglycemic. Hypoglycemia is very dangerous and can cause seizures and even death. Call your doctor and get a refill of your insulins, but don't mix.

Mix: The simple answer is NO!
Much more important, you must see a Diabetes specialist who, if the correct nurse or doctor, will work to get rid of diabetes.
Yes that can happen and should happen!

If your doctor or nurse keeps you going with the above meds, it is time to see an Endocrinologist who will take care of you. You won't get rid of your current meds immediately but that will happen!

Not directly: The result of an overdose of Humalog (insulin lispro) would be a low blood sugar; although Epinephrine would raise the blood sugar somewhat, the appropriate treatment would glucose (sugar) to avoid a dangerous fall in blood sugar while the effect of Insulin wears off.

It has a quick onset, short duration of action, less variation in absorption and decrease chances of low blood sugar (hypoglycemia) if use appropriately. Indicated for management of diabetes mellitus. Humalog (insulin lispro) is administered subcutaneously only. Can be use in pumps.

It's really good.: Humalog (insulin lispro) is a brand of rapid-acting Insulin produced by eli lilly & co. Here in the usa.  It is given at meals (or in an Insulin pump), to provide quick-onset action to control blood sugars at meals.  There are a couple of other brands of rapid-acting Insulin on the market (novolog, apidra), but they all have about the same action.

Depends: It would depend on several factors - overdose by how much, degree of Insulin resistance, blood sugar at time of overdose, patient's ability to detect low blood sugar and availability if food/drink to treat hypoglycemia.  I've had patients take 50 units more than they should have (took wrong insulin) who survived unscathed.

Short acting insulin: such as Humalog, (insulin lispro) generally begins lowering your blood sugar with 15 minutes of an injection.  Its peak action is between 30 minutes - 1.5 hours.  It may still be having an effect on blood sugar for as long as 6 - 8 hours after an injection.

insulin #: test strips container shows--1 unit if 187-253, if using kwikpen humalog (insulin lispro) u-100. but, my dr. says 2 units if 200-250. please, what do i do?

Diabetes care: You should see an Endocrinologist who will give you much better advice.
In general it is a pre-meal rapid dose and a nighttime long-acting medicine.
