Blindness can range from "legally blind", 20/200 or less on the eye chart in both eyes, in which many people cope well for usual activities around the house, even reading print that is not too small with the help of magnifiying devices, to total blindness, not even seeing any light.  All "blind" patient have to give up driving. The degree of blindness affects the description.

Vision loss: Bindness is a spectrum from loss of all light perception (total blindness), to varying degrees of loss meeting legal standards - vision lower than 20/200 or a visual field less than 10 degrees in extent.  The causes vary - some are reversible, some treatable to prevent worsening, and some permanent.  Your ophthalmologist should see you to evaluate your category and treat if possible.

Mostly genetic: By far the most common cause of color deficiency is a lack of 1 of 3 types of cones in the retina. This is inherited on the x chromosome. Which means it's most often passed on to sons from mothers. The mother's dad usually has the condition. Less common causes are medication toxicity and conditions affecting the retina or optic nerve, like ms + retinitis pigmentosa.

Testing: The most common type of "color blindness" is red-green color deficiency. Blue-yellow deficiency or true color blindness (achromatopsia) are rare. Color testing can identify which. The problem is a lack of certain types of cones or their opsins (light-sensitive compounds). Red-green deficiency can be adapted to fairly easily and is not very limiting, but the others can significantly impact vision.

Color blind can join: Apparently all army enlistees are tested for color blindness, but being color blind will not disqualify you from service in regular enlistment. In some cases vivid red and green lights must be distinguished.

No: This is definitely not recommended.  It is uncomfortable and most would not due it.  It sometimes is done for religious purposes and by people under "the influence".  The eyes focuses the sunlight and damages a portion of the retina where it is focused in a non-specific way so all receptors are damaged and color blindness does not result, just a loss of a portion of the visual field.
