does coconut oil really help to treat molluscum contagiosum?

Skin lesions: Molluscum contagiosum is caused by a dna pox virus for which we do not have specific therapy.  Often these lesions will regress spontaneously with time, and if you apply coconut oil and they go away the temporal relationships will convince you that it was effective.  There is no evidence to support this, but it cannot hurt much.

Umbilication: Molluscum contagiosum bumps have a characteristic indentation or umbilicalion at the top of  each bump.  This can sometimes be appreciated with a magnifying glass.  A dermatologist will often give the bump in question a light freeze with liquid nitrogen to accentuate the umbilication so when in doubt see your dermatologist.

Unsure: There are many reports (especially on the internet on non-peer/doctor reviewed sites) of people trying apple cider vinegar and tea tree oil for molluscum with reports of positive results but, as far as i know, no controlled studies proving profound effectiveness have been done.  However, I am not completely up on the literature and so can't say this for certain.

No---- none of these: See a dermatologist. You need 1 or more additional treatments. Don't worry. It is not serious. If you wait long enough ----- perhaps a few months---there will be spontaneous clearing.

Molluscum contagious: Astringent chemicals on surface of molluscum lesions to destroy successive layers of the skin include potassium hydrochloride, and cantharidin. Two clinical trials treating molluscum in children with a combination of  of essential oil of melaleuca alternifolia (tea tree oil) and organically bound iodine has shown effectiveness as has salicylalates used to treat warts.

Start with topical : hydrogen peroxide twice a day and schedule to see dermatologist for treatment. I still prefer to lance core which is where the virus is, but some may disappear with peroxide.

Molluscum: Molluscum contagiosum is caused by a virus and usually causes a mild skin disease. Usually no treatment is needed because the bumps disappear by themselves within 6-12 months.  If not, treatment options include cryotherapy, curettage, laser, creams like salicylic acid, podophyllin, tretinoin, cantharidin, and imiquimod, or oral cimetidine.

Yes it could: The only general treatment for this common condition is either waiting for it to go away or excision. Chemical burning is one option but can cause injuries.
