Gentian violet: Gentian violet is an over the counter product with a long history of use for oral thrush. It is a purple liquid which will permanently stain clothing, so careful handling is recommended!  It is rarely used anymore and difficult to find.  Adding probiotics and raw garlic to your diet can help keep things in balance, but a florid infection will likely require Rx medications to prevent recurrence.

See below: Thrush is white on the tongue and mucosa on the side and top and bottom of the mouth.  The geographic tongue is not caused by thrush and is benign.  It looks more like continents - thus the name.  If concerned, see your doc.

Bug type different : Oral thrush is caused by a fungal overgrowth while herpes is caused by a virus.  Site of lesions also help visually to distinguish, but a biopsy is needed to confirm.

Always in moderation: It is not common to get oral thrush, if you are healthy and not immunocompromised.
