i have been very thirsty lately. i drink a lot of water, but all that quenches my thirst is flavored beverages. could this be diabetes?

Diabetes is possible: Thirst, increased urination, increased appetite are symptoms of diabetes. The diagnosis of diabetes is more likely if you have risk factors: family history, overweight, not active, eat poorly ...
You can see your physician and order fasting blood sugars and if >125 diabetes is diagnosed. 'pre-diabetes' is a fasting blood sugar between 100-125 and many people fall into that group.

is frequent thirst of water a necessary symptom of diabetes? could you have diabetes even if you don't have that symptom?

Yes: Many people with diabetes have no symptoms at all.  Symptoms related to diabetes occur when sugars are very high (over 200 mg/dl).  As sugars go high, more sugar goes out in the urine causing increased urination.  As you urinate more you get thirsty and drink more.  But if sugars are under 200 you may have no symptoms and yet those high sugars can cause long term problems.

Other causes: anxiety, medication side effects, stress, dehydration, thyroid disease, high calcium concentration in blood, high aldosterone level, head injury, brain lesion, too much cortisol in the body, too much growth hormone in the body...

You may have: developed a phobia (irrational fear) that you have a health condition like diabetes.  Please follow whatever check up schedule your doc suggests to you and he/she will keep an eye on your blood sugar.  Also consider seeing a clinical psychologist for treatment for anxiety.  Peace and good health.  Of course, if other symptoms develop please see your doc at once.

High glucose: The high blood glucose directly damages nerves, bit by bit, over time, causing the neuropathy.  The high blood sugar also causes you to urinate a lot because  glucose gets dumped into the urine.  This will dehydrate you and cause a lot of thirst.

Yes: Excessive thirst and urination usually appear when your blood sugar on the average has been above 200 all the time.  You do not need to wait until the classic symptoms appear to intervine, it might take you years to do so and you might already have the complications at that time.

Medication: Is one of the more common causes. A less common cause is sjogren's disease.

what can be the cause of excessively increased thirst? had diabetes since two years but now is under complete control. gtt is normal.

Accepted Answer

Most common cause: would be elevated blood sugar even though you think it is under "control". There are other physical and psychological causes that your doctor could evaluate.
