Just the outside: The outside is the vulva and can be be gently washed during baths and showers. The inside is the vagina. Vaginas are not meant to be washed. That means washing vaginas is not natural, and can mess up the inside, balanced conditions of the vagina. It's nice to have good hygiene. However, women with clean vulvas also get UTI's. One cannot say with certainty that washing vulvas prevents UTI's.

Vaginal "freshness"?: The best method of cleansing the vulva is to wash with a mild soap such as Dove, Caress, or Ivory ONLY on the outside. The vagina itself is self-cleaning, unless infected because it has a pH "balancing bacteria" if it is not disturbed. Please leave all the "vaginal freshness" products such as douches and sprays on the shelf of the pharmacy, otherwise you will be seeing your MD more often.

Too much scrubbing or harsh chemicals create more problems than they solve, & douching destroys the natural balance & protection.

Bacterial Vaginosis: A healthy vagina has special bacteria called "lactobacillus". They produce lactic acid.  This prevents yeast and other types of bacteria from growing.  If they get wiped out, other bacteria take over.  These produce an odor.  This is likely BV.  You need an antibiotic to kill the bad bacteria and then need to restore the normal bacteria by eating yogurt (with live active cultures) or probiotics.

Don't mess with MN: Don't mess with Mother Nature as the discharge is normal and protective of your vaginal tissues. As long as you gently wash the outside with a mild soap such as Dove, Caress or Ivory. you are "good to go".
