Depends on activity: That depends on how often you're having sex, especially unprotected sex.  It could be anywhere from never to every 3 months.  I have some patients who should probably be tested every week!  but remember that there's no single easy test for stds. To test broadly you may need a combination of blood tests, urine tests, and often throat and rectal swabs.

Variable: Gonnorhea or chlamydia can be urine tested after 2-3 days, syphilis or hpv when sore or lesion develops, can be weeks, blood tests take time because there have to be organism or antibodies develop, i.E hiv/aids or syphilis. Early tests can give both false positive & false negative results. Later testing much more reliable.

STDs : Testing can happen two ways.  Most common would be at your primary care clinic.  Or, i believe, in canada there are also public health or std clinics that can do the testing.  There are twelve common stds so you may want to go in with symptoms, worries and questions. Many people do not need testing for all twelve.

STD testing: None of the testing done would likely be affected, even if your partner had an std.
However, if you know you are going to be tested, why not wait until the results come back before having sex again?

Std's and "Aids": Std's are bacterial or viral, and testing for them will not prevent "aids", which is caused also by a virus (HIV).  Best is to use condoms if one has multiple partners or if your partner has multiple others. In a perfect world, get your sexual partner checked as well as yourself before having a sexual relationship.

STD testing: If you test negative for STDs, you only need to be tested if there has been another exposure or you have symptoms which concern you.
