Often the cortison is mixed with a local anesthetic to immediately relieve the pain and care must be taken to not use an anesthetic with epinephrine, which can stimulate the heart.The usual care must be taken to prevent bloodstream injection when given.

: I would expect cerebral edema in this unfortunate scenario. I also expect the edema would involve the cerebral cortex as well as the brain stem. Needless to say recovery of more brain function is very unlikely the longer the coma lasts.
