Don't Wait.: There are actually a number melanoma subtypes. Some can grow slowly over many years and some can progress rapidly over months. Melanoma can be completely cured if it diagnosed and treated in the earliest stages. While certain clinical features and someday genetic tests may provide clues, no one should 'play chicken' with a potential melanoma. In all cases, early diagnosis and treatment is the key.

: Not necessarily.  Superficial spreading melanoma is just one type. Other can grow deeper without superficial spreading.
If the mole doubles in size, becomes irregular in size, shape or color, bleeds, ulcerates or develops a nodule, see a doctor. Wish you good health!

: I recommend that you see a Dermatologist for a thorough examination of your skin. If you have melanoma it needs to be treated as soon as possible.

Yes: Melanoma is a fairly aggressive malignancy with a significant history of metastasis a much more problematic issue than local growth. No one should have a melanoma left untreated for a 6 year time frame. I question wether you are referring to nodular basal cell carcinoma which also needs to be excised but does not have the metastatic potential.

Yes: Melanomas need to be completely excised with an appropriate margin based on the thickness of the melanoma to ensure it won't reoccur at that site.

Yes: Melanoma is a very bad type of skin cancer that can be lethal if left alone for a long enough time.  The best treatment is surgery when it's caught early. Unless there is an absolute compelling reason not to have it removed, I would see surgeon who specializes in melanoma.

Yes: If you have any type of melanoma, you should have it treated as soon as you can.  Left alone, melanoma will end your life.  The only time one would consider not treating it is if the patient can't undergo treatment, or if the life expectancy is already very short b/c of another medical problem.
