Up to several days: It can persist several days.  Watch out for progressive pain, fever, weakness in your legs or incontinence as these may be signs of post-procedure bleeding or infection.  Back pain is fairly common after a lumbar puncture 10-25 % and should resolve over the subsequent 3-7 days.  If not you should be evaluated by a medical provider.

Most to least common: Reasons usually are pelvic imbalance and core weakening, psoas muscle spasm, scar tissue formation around the cord and nerve roots causing pain syndrome commonly seen in patients after back surgery called post laminectomy syndrome.

How much pain?: If there is sensitivity but only mild that may not be unusual. The pain if severe is unusual in this area but might have bruised a nerve if severe . See your doctor to better describe the severity and see if it is related to something else going on.

can a spinal tap show something a mri cant show? are there any other test that can be done to explain burning sharp back pain? i had a mri of brain, neck and whole spine with explanation as to why and im in severe pain and cant even bend?

: Yes. There are medical conditions that might cause findings in spinal fluid that do not show up on MRI, CT, or X-rays. If your doctor has advised lumbar puncture (LP, "spinal tap"), you should agree. It may sound frightening ("needle into the spine"), but LP is not very painful and has little risk of harm. Spinal tap: No it is unusual, usually in causes pain at the place of niddle insertion which should not last for more than couple of days.
In some cases some leak of csfoccur at the place of the tap and causing post spinal tap headache which can last from few days up to few weeks.

Yes: It is normal to have some pain after a spinal tap.  I would expect the pain to eventually resolve 100% - the time frame is different for each individual, but most patients will be better within a few days.  Try ice and anti-inflammatories.  See a physician if significant pain persists for greater than 10 - 14 days.

Not clear: Complications of spinal taps could cause you headaches or leg symptoms, but isolated back pain weeks later might not be related at all. Perhaps the condition that prompted the spinal tap could be the culprit. Rarely, an impromperly performed tap can be associated with ectopic tissue growth along the needle track in a very delayed fashion.
