It can take a while.: Firstly it might depend on how swollen you started out. Secondly it matters if you had active treatment (catheter based) or passive (drugs only). With non-active treatment it can be a while for your body to break down enough of the clot to allow blood to flow again. Until that time there is blood backing up and taking non-standard routes back to the heart resulting in swelling.

Varies: It can go down in a matter of days to weeks or months or never.  There is a condition call "post phlebiits syndrome" and the leg can be swollen for prolonged periods of time.  I have patients with swelling for years after one or more clots in the veins of the legs.

It may never go away: Swelling in the legs following an acute DVT can take several days to weeks to resolve if properly managed with anticoagulation and use of compression stockings. An often ignored consequence of DVT is post-thrombotic syndrome, which often includes leg swelling, and occurs because of damage to the veins which had a dvt. This is also managed by compression, however, will never go away.

Several months: After starting warfarin the blood clot can no longer grow. The body will start to break down the clot within days. It takes months to have the clot reabsorbed or for the process to make an opening through the clot so blood can get through again. Swelling will be visibly less in a few weeks but it could be 6 months before the leg is back to normal. Occasionally, the swelling persists indefinitely.

: It doesn't appear that you have any predisposing conditions making you overly susceptible to DVT. This is a form of health anxiety that you have. I think you'd benefit from cognitive behavioral therapy from a mental health professional. This therapy should be effective in alleviating your health anxiety.

i have swelling and pain in my upper thigh. there is no redness or warmth. i have heart problems. do i need to worry about a dvt i have heart problems, and currently take 325 mg of aspirin daily.

While : While many things can cause swelling and pain, you might have a case of dvt. While the use of Aspirin daily can decrease the risks of clotting, they might not necessarily eliminate it. I would contact you primary doctor and see if you can get non-invasive ultrasound testing to see if there is dvt. Even a blood test called d-dimer can help rule out clotting problems. If the d-dimer test is normal then you don't need the ultrasound. If it is positive you would need further workup.

: Please follow up with your physician right away. If you cannot see your physician, urgent care is an option. Please follow up today. A DVT should be ruled out. Watch for signs of shortness of breath and dizziness.
