Today is fine : Home pregnancy tests are very accurate. They are the same tests used in a doctors office. They can detect a pregnancy 7-10 days after conception. The best time to take one is when you miss your period.  If you doubt the result you can repeat it in 1-2 days. If you were pregnant the hormone level would rise enough for detection.

Now: A pregnancy test can be positive as soon as ten days after conception - so if your friend ovulated the day she had sex the test could be positive.  If she ovulated a couple days later, she still could have conceived but the test may require a couple more days to become positive.  Generally, when the period is due, the test will be positive when conception has occurred.

Depends on cycle: If the cycle number of days has passed, then one can take a pregnancy test in a few days. For example, if the cycle length is usually 28 days, and today is day 32, then the cycle number of days has passed. If a test today is negative, there is still a small change of a false negative, so it's better to wait a few more days for a definitive test and answer. There's no rush to test.

2 weeks: Irregular periods can make it hard to determine.  But generally i would suggest to test again in about 2 weeks.  If you are really pregnant then it should be positive by that time.
