Several hours: It really depends on the drops used at your doctors office. The standard drops used can keep pupils dilated between 4-6 hours. However, in some patients the drops can keep the pupils dilated for up to 24 hours.

Pupil dilating drops: Usually will last for 3-4 hours after your exam.  Occasionally, some patients' pupils are extremely responsive to dilation and the drops could last up to 10-12 hrs.

Optic Neuritis: Optic neuritis is a condition which is caused by an autoimmune injury to the optic nerve.  This produces loss of the fatty insulation ("myelin") around the nerve which makes the nerve not function well.  Patients have vision changes (esp. loss of color and brightness sensation), a change in pupil function, and frequently pain with eye movement.  MS is usually diagnosed by MRI or a spinal tap.

Very uncommon: It is rare that tropicamide would do that, but see your ophthalmologist for a recheck!

See Eye MD: Be sure you saw an ophthalmologist.  Even though the exam is normal, it could be a problem with the optic nerve, which is the cable that connects the eye to the brain.

Common: This depends upon the amount of the drop that was absorbed, and the internal biochemical neutralizing that the eye accomplishes.  Wait 12-24 hours to see the final result which almost certainly will be fine.

6-48 hrs: Depending on the drops used.  The most common drop tropicamide has a dilating effect of 4-8 hrs.  Next is cyclogyl (cyclopentolate) 24-48 hrs.

Rarely other longer acting drops are used in regular exam.  If you are stays dilated more than 48 hrs contact your eye doctor.

Pupil dilating drops: Usually last for 4-6 hours after they are instilled.  Depending on the patient, the drops may last longer, especially with people who are blue-eyed.  In addition, some dilating drops are known to last longer.  We try to avoid them whenever possible so the drops wear off more quickly.
