: Herpes simplex is spread by skin to skin contact even in the absence of an outbreak of sores. In this scenario, sharing the same cigarette, I'd say could transmit the virus.

i have herpes orally and i hear alot about shedding how do you know you are shedding and what can you do or take to prevent that from happening?

: Shedding does occur and typically lasts at least 15 days or longer from the first tingle. To prevent cold sores, valacyclovir or another antiviral drug, acyclovir, can be taken daily. This reduces the chance of a cold sore coming back by about one-third. It could also help if you avoid triggers, such as exposure to sun or wind, that can activate the cold sore virus.  Meds also help with shedding.

: No risk at all. Herpes viruses are not transmitted by contact with their clothing, or with anything in their environment. You also cannot get it by sharing an infected person's toilet, shower, towels, eating utensils, etc. The only way you can catch it is by kissing, oral sex, or intercourse with an infected person.

: No risk at all. You cannot catch herpes except by someone's herpes sore coming in direct contact with your genital area, mouth, etc. The virus is never transmitted by indirect exposure or by contact with contaminated surfaces, hands, fingers, etc. Don't worry about this.

: No.  HSV is transmitted by contact of a susceptible person with an individual excreting virus.  The virus must encounter mucosal surfaces or broken skin in  order for an infection to be initiated.

: Treatment to prevent outbreaks is mostly for genital HSV2 infection but probably works for oral herpes (usually HSV1). Is it certain your outbreaks are recurrent herpes? Oral herpes usually recurs once a year or less. If confirmed, ask your doctor about daily oral valacyclovir or acyclovir. Also avoid known triggers; outbreaks can be triggered by sun exposure, for example. Good luck.
