How far does the testing for a hair follicle and nail drug test go back? i am getting conflicting answers on both tests. i have been told 90-120 days or longer for hair follicle depending on length of hair and up to 1 1/2-2 1/2 years for nail testing.

You may be getting conflicting answers because how far back the testing goes depends on how fast your hair and nails grow.  When hair is tested, they usually test the 1.5 inches closest to the scalp.  If your hair grows quickly, this could be 90 days, if your hair grows slowly, it could be 120.  If you have long hair, they could test the whole strand and see any drug use for the past few years, but this is not typically done.  It is expensive and wouldn't be very fair to long-haired folks, right?  The same goes for the fingernail clippings however, those tend to be 3-6 months, not the 1 1/2 to 2 1/2 years you mentioned.

Depends on the length of the hair, but the average size hair will go back about 6 months.  There is variability in hair growth, and depending on whether someone is fair-skinned or dark, the hair may retain certain drugs differently.  But in general, its about 6 months worth. The larger question is whether an employer has any right to determine what someone does during off-time not working.

Wellbutrin has been known to cause positive drug screens for  amphetamine, methamphetamine, & LSD - Lysergic acid diethylamide (not sure if these are hair follicle tests) . I would discuss with a chemist who works with drug screening to find out if there is a way to show that this was a false positive.

The only SPECIFIC test for heroin is a test for its metabolite 6-monoacetylmorphine or 6MAM. I am not sure whether this is available in swab form, but the first thing with ANY positive test on a screening test, such as a urine drug screen or oral fluid swab is to do the confirmatory test.  If they have not done that, they are not following procedure.  There also needs to be chain-of-custody on it.

Why would YOU be waiting for a test.  Hair follicle tests are done by employers and other authorities to determine if someone has used drugs over a long period of time. Depending on the length of hair they sample, it can detect use up to 6 months back or longer. If you are due for a test, even if you stop using drugs now, it can be detected 6 months later. Get help for your drug problem please.

Drug testing for pro (steroid) hormones is getting increasingly sophisticated. But the side effects of using spawn and its relatives are dire. The best advice i could give anyone using it is "don't". I hope you ask having stopped, if you have been using it. If you haven't please don't take offense at my concern.
