Same diff: Same class (iii) and are equianalgesic (eg 1 5/325 vicodin = 1 t#3).  Vicodin has hydrocodone, man made Codeine good for people who can't tolerate codeine.  Sad thing? Usa = 2% of worlds population, uses 98% of the worlds vicodin prescriptions.   Be careful about using short-acting narcotics for non-malignant pain.  It's generally a bad long-term answer.

Opiate withdrawal: Day six congratulations! The mental part will be the worst for you: sadness, depression, craving and anxiety.  It can take some time before everything returns to normal, but everyone is different. Try getting an extra support form the AA meetings or from your doctor. Take care.

Withdrawl: The best way to get off narcotics short term is to taper or reduce dose slowly over days.
The larger the dose and the longer the time taking it will make withdrawal a more difficult task.  You may require professional help and treatment of side effects through the weaning process.

How severe?: Mild symptoms can be treated symptomatically - Ibuprofen or Acetaminophen for pain, Imodium for diarrhea, pepto bismol for abdominal cramps, Benadryl (diphenhydramine) for help sleeping.  A blood pressure medicine, clonidine, can also reduce withdrawal symptoms. For more severe withdrawal, Methadone and Buprenorphine can be used to taper someone down over several days to several weeks, or for maintenance treatment.

Possibly: But may depend on dosing and genetic risk for addictive behavior. Individuals may take narcotics after major surgery, but begin tapering them as soon as the pain subsides. So, in most cases, withdrawal isn't a problem.
