Same symptoms: Usually, when pt experiences what appears to be a "plateau" in response to antidepressants, it could be that the medication needs adjustment.  This is presuming there have been no other changes that have occurred, such as changes in other medications, new medical conditions, or increased psychosocial stressors. Inadequate medication adherence can also present similarly. Discuss with doctor. Best.

Ask Dr: Stopping an SSRI can be very challenging for some and it is very important to have close monitoring by a doctor of any symptoms that develop or stay. It needs to be done slowly and each person's characteristics can make a difference. It's worth doing but it must be done carefully. Don't try to handle it alone - you want the doctor to be responsible for these decisions. Glad you're better now!

Yes, if doc agrees: always discuss your plan of care with ur doc. it's most common 4 docs 2 recommend that patients reduce the dose of one med while they transition on to a new one, for the reason u mentioned -- no lapse. docs call this a "cross taper". Unclear how long it will take for zoloft (sertraline) to work. some pts feel btr in just a few days, while others may need up to 8 wks on the right dose. ring ur doc to discuss :)

Effexor (venlafaxine) XR: Eliminating immediate-release Effexor (venlafaxine) takes about 3 days, but the elimination of the xr form depends on its absorption -- which can add 15 hours or so to the whole process.  So, 4-5 days should be reasonable.

Maybe withdrawal: You may be fine, but you may also experience flu like muscle aches, and generally feeling crummy.

Effexor (venlafaxine): Effexor (venlafaxine) and its breakdown product have half-lives of 5 and 11 hours, respectively.  This means that both should be gone from your system in 55 hours, or about 2.5 days.
