Low risk: The type of hormone that would affect your clot risk is estrogen and there's no estrogen in plan b. You getting pregnant however would be bad for surgery.

When : When they are very fresh--less than two weeks old--clots can often be dissolved or mechanically broken down using a variety of techniques.  However, these approaches are usually contraindicated in a patient who has recently had surgery.  With older clots, like yours, blood thinners like Coumadin (warfarin) are the usual approach.

A patient who develops a lot of clots in multiple areas of the body needs to be evaluated for an abnormality in the clotting system.  Have you been seen by a hematologist? If not, that would probably be an appropriate next step for you.

Limit risk: Depending on you risk, your doctor may make recommendations. You should remain active and not sedentery. The more time spent in bed, the higher the risk of blood clots. Compression stockings also decrease risk. The risk remains for about 3-4 weeks after surgery.

Genetic test: It is not likely that you are at more risk than other pregnant women. There are genetic tests for variants of factor II and V that can be ordered by your doctor. You should have a talk with your obstetrician to ascertain if testing is warranted.

2 weeks.: Generally speaking, after about 2 weeks, you're out of the woods, as far as developing blood clots. However, we have seen patients develop them 2-3 weeks after surgery, but that's extremely rare. Check with your surgeon.

Uncommon: It's uncommon, but it could happen.  However it would likely depend on a number of factors such as your medical health history, location of surgery, amount of stasis or inactivity, gender, use of birth control or other medications, etc.  Hope this helps.
