How long: disability: How long to receive disability on the basis of a mental disorder varies from state to state.  In my california, the social sec. Or "ssi" office is seriously backed up, and my patients wait anywhere from 2 months [on the "fast" side!] to 2-5 years, once you go thru appeal process.  The more evidence, old records, reports u can give ssi, the better. Schizophrenia, serious illness lesser time maybe.

No: Honesty is the best policy regarding a psychological evaluation submitted for SSI. These tests don't "diagnose" by themselves. A psychologist will not  look at your individual responses, but will look at the pattern of results. If you are dishonest (faking bad) that could be detected by the tests. The IQ testing mainly just verifies you are smart enough to take a valid test.

No: There are many times when pain medication is needed but there are many alternatives. Many patients are able to obtain substantial pain relief with physical therary and/or chiropractic care. There are many injections that may be available depending on where the pain is located. Proper diet, exercise, and smoking cessation can also go a long way towards relieving pain.

See below: This can be a bit of a long process but it usually begins with us gov't application. Go to www.Socialsecurity.Gov/disabilityonline which is a good web reference with the application and simple faq on the topic of disability.  Once you apply the gov't will forward your application to the state agency who will start the process of evaluating you.  Then your doctor(s) need(s) to fill out paperwork.

Acute illness: Rhabdomyolysis is generally and acute illness. While it is disabling it is not a long term illness. The person usually gets over it, however, it may lead to long term kidney damage that could become a disability.

Hard to say: Depends on a lot and what you do for a living.  Being disabled means you cannot do anything else as an occupation since the only ability you had was the one occupation you cannot hold anymore.  Recommend never getting labeled "disabled" if possible.

Unusual question: why do you want to know?  Are you writing a homework assignment or has someone told you that you or someone you know has an abnormal chromosome 17?  The answers come from the cytogeneticist who analyzed the chromosomes==not from a list of over a thousand genetic loci which might have mutations.
