Sleeping medications: With symptoms described, it would best to see either a psychiatrist or sleep medicine doctor.  Antipsychotic medications should not be used for sleep, nor should medications like Lunesta (eszopiclone) be used for a long time.  Psychotherapy can help as well other medications for nightmares, such as Prazosin.

Above FDA limit: The FDA limit per day is 3mg, and they are actually now recommending less than that.

INDSOMNIA: Getting good night's sleep is important for physical &amp; mental health. Insomnia might be due to several reasons. Have a physical exam to rule out illness. If cleared consult with a Clinical Psychologist with expertise in multiple types of psychotherapy that helps you benefit from medication prescribed by a Psychiatrist. If uncomfortable with your Dr. seek 2nd opinion. You may need a sleep study.

Try other means 1st: The best sleep is natural sleep. If you're having trouble sleeping, try simple changes: don't go to bed if you're not sleepy, avoid caffeine and alcohol, and don't exercise late in the day. Stay off your computer or phone late in the evening; bright screens can interfere with natural sleep cycles. Try meds only under a doctor's care and for occasional, not daily use. Good luck!

NO!: ABSOLUTELY NOT!
Sounds like you are becoming "tolerant" to these chemical sleep aides! You should not take any of these more than every other night!! NEVER take two in the same night!
You need to have your primary care provider (PCP) to discuss good "SLEEP HYGIENE" with you!

HYPNOTICS: Sedative hypnotics can be additive so be careful. You should not mix them if 1 lunesta (eszopiclone) is not effective take 2 max. Not wise to jump to ambien. If insomnia persists. You need labs checked including Vit D and TFTS . Also a PSG=Sleep Study. To evaluate for restless legs and sleep apnea.

Depends: Generally speaking, Lunesta (eszopiclone) may be better for sleep onset, trazodone for sleep maintenance, though there might be exceptions. Ideally, best approach to resolve sleep issues is to treat underlying cause  (e.g. Depression, anxiety, sleep apnea), then practice sleep hygiene (sleep-promoting behaviors), and then consider meds for sleep.
