Set a schedule: Children thrive off patterns and quickly a set schedule will become a habit.  After school or sports practice have a healthy snack (fruit and yogurt, nuts, etc) and then have homework time.  Have a set place in your house to do homework (good lighting, limit distractions) only after this time should a tv show or video game be allowed.  Doing homework late at night is not healthy or productive.

Sticker chart: Every time they brush their teeth allow your child to pick out a sticker and place it on a chart.  After 7 straight days of brushing at least twice a day (14 stickers!) reward the somehow- a new coloring book, a special trip to the park, etc.  This is a good way to positively reinforce good habits like teeth brushing.  This method can work for other chores around the house as well.

Supportive/adventure: First don't project this as a reflection of bad parenting or a sign of future weakness.Examine your past & understand your feelings may reflect how your parents treated to you for similar behavior & not understood how common & temporary this stage is.Be supportive as you explore adventures that will distract him/her from their fears.Rejection aggrivates their fear of loosing your love.

Change the emphasis: Kids often migrate to their parents bed causing loss of sleep for all. I would change your focus to keeping them in their room.They can sleep on the floor or bed, whatever.I let them keep their door open if they stay in their room& close it if they don't.Explore scary issues & resolve them but be firm.Give them a big boy/girl reputation to live up to but return them each time.

Make her sure that you love her and support her. Do not rush.

Energy is good: Better to find sufficient learning opportunities to take advantage of his energy than to take away his gift. Have him help you with housework and chores.  If you don't have enough energy to devote to his upbringing and education, better to find help. Enroll him in sports, arts, music, and other activities. A mind is a terrible thing to waste.

Offer healthy foods: Offering healthy foods for meals and snacks allows kids to eat really as much as they want.  You can't really go overboard on carrot sticks and celery with yogurt dip!  at mealtimes you can help them divide their plate into quarters- 2 quarters for veggies, 1 for meat and 1 for starch.  This helps them begin to learn portion control.

See doc: See your doc. The child probably needs an inhaled corticosteroid medication such as pulmicort, qvar, Flovent etc.  Frequent night cough is a sign of uncontrolled asthma. The inhaled corticosteroid medications reduce inflammation and swelling in the airway. He or she may need some other medication as well such as zyrtec or claritin (loratadine). Also dust mite precautions such as a zippered mattress cover helps.

Why anxious?: The source of the anxiety may be an important factor.  If they will not discuss this with you, a good child psychologist may be helpful.  Before that, however, going with the child to school, meeting the teacher and perhaps some of the classmates may be helpful.  Make it a positive experience and reward their efforts.

Persistence: Just like any habit, it requires consistent  attempts to modify that behavior.  You should tell your child that you are concerned because this habit can lead to nose bleeding problems or even can damage the nose (septal perforation-hole in the divider between the nostrils, adhesions -scars inside the nose) which could require uncomfortable procedures in the doctors office or even painful surgery.
