Sexual safety: There really isn't anything called "safe sex" except with a mutually monogamous partner with a known negative and  STD tested sexual history. Herpes active lesions are very capable to transmit the infection to others. The herpes virus has been known to shed from the site after healing for up to 21 days. Condoms are useless if the lesions are on the scrotum and not the penis. Use sexual safety!

Condoms: Hsv is spread from one person to another by touching or intimate contact. Oral sex can also allow the virus to spread. You are most contagious when you have an active blister, but the virus can also be spread even when there isn’t a blister present. The best ways to avoid spreading the virus is to not touch active blisters. Using condoms reduces the risk, but not 100%.

Yes and Yes. : Yes, you may have an outbreak.  Safe sex is defined as condom sex with no lesions.  There is a study that showed transmission weakly in the absence of lesions, so use a condom.  

Outbreak usually are brought on by stress.

Misinformed?: If using protection that covers the infected area you don't have to wait. But the more important thing here is that having sores does not in any way correlate to contagiousness. Everything about herpes changed five years ago when we learned that herpes viral shedding is not predictable and has no correlation to outbreaks. You are just as contagious without a sore as you may be with a sore.

Accepted Answer

No: Herpes & HIV are two different viral infections.  Passing one does not mean you will pass the other.  However, there is definitely a real possibility of passing both.  To reduce the risk, the HIV + person should be on anti-retrovirals & protease inhibitors.  The person should also always watch for herpes lesions &  be on treatment if any occur.  They should also practice safe sex esp with lesions.

No: This will simply transmit the virus to the recipient of the oral sex.  If they, however, have previously had genital herpes or herpetic lesions in their mouths this should not be a significant risk.

Accepted Answer

Risk exists: You can transmit herpes via sex even if your partner is not actively shedding or has active lesions. While Valtrex (valacyclovir) can prevent outbreaks from herpes lesions, it in itself is not a cure and only a drug to suppress outbreaks. Condoms can drastically reduce but not entirely eliminate the risk of transmission.

Accepted Answer

Use a condom: Folks with herpes can shed virus and infect others even without an outbreak, something called asymptomatic shedding. You should be checked to see if you have immunity, even if you've never had symptoms. I would even consider using a condom to reduce (unfortunately  not eliminate) exposure.
