Mild cramping: There will be mild cramping and perhaps some residual bleeding post-op. The cervix will be open after dilation and therefore there is a slight risk for infection if there are "visitors" in the vagina during the first post-op week. It was once considered a "minor " surgery, but of course "minor surgery" is what happens to someone else.

Failed pregnancy: Usually for failed early pregnancy such as first-trimester miscarriage. It's sometimes used as a diagnostic tool for non-pregnant women with irregular bleeding. There are other reasons as well.

Depends.: It depends on your insurance (or lack thereof), the setting in which it is performed and any additional testing or complications. On average, i would guesstimate it ranges in the several hundreds of us dollars to little over a thousand $ as co-payment.

About 20 mins: The first step, dilation of the uterus, usually takes about 10 minutes. The second step, hysteroscopy (use of a endoscope that allows the physician to examine inside the uterus) and then curettage (scraping or scooping with a special tool called a curette to remove the contents of the uterus) takes an additional 10 minutes.

Endometrium gone: The material expelled during a period is the lining of the womb.A D&C removes all the lining(down to the muscle layer) and often takes a few cycles to reform.

Accepted Answer

Depends why: Often a d & c may be done under sedation with Propofol and other meds such as versed or fentanyl. The gyn doctor may use local anesthesia around the cervix. If it's an emergency situation where the patient doesn't have an empty stomach, if the patient is extremely obese, or if there is heavy bleeding, general anesthesia may be safest.  The ob/gyn and anes doctors will decide the best plan.

Possibly: an endometrial ablation might be useful, or progesterone  medication treatment. In some cases bleeding that persists may need a hysterectomy, please discuss further options with your doctor.
