Change diet/exercise: Decrease intake of fats, salt and sugar during this time and increase intake of complex carbohydrates.  Six small meals rather than 3 larger meals will keep your blood sugar level more consistent.

Calcium 1200mg/d and magnesium each day may improve mood and decrease swelling.

Avoid caffeine and alcohol.

Aerobic exercise 30min/d

diuretics or mild antidepressants may provide relief of symptoms.

Short term/long term: The pain can sometimes be controlled by starting Naproxin (Aleave) or similar product the day prior to the onset of an expected menses &amp; continued through the end as needed. If this does not help, you may want to discuss the issue with your doc. The BC pill was originally studied for such problems &amp; provided relief for many. Over time the BC side effect became it's main use.

Basal body temp: After ovulation, your core body temperature actually increases about a degree.  This stays elevated and then comes back down during your period.  This is one explanation.  The other thing that might be going on is a version of hotflashes related to decreasing estrogen levels that occur during your period.
