Clay color stool is a light yellow tan and it is a concern when it stays that color for a prolonged time (more than 5 days). It can indicate liver disease where the bile ducts are damaged. Talk to your Dr if you have persistent clay colored stool, as they can test your liver enzymes and do imaging

Doctor can evaluate: With such tummy symptoms, a person can write down everything he eats or drinks, on a daily calendar, and take it to his primary care or G.I. doctor for evaluation. Include on the diary:  which meds, how much, and taken at what time. Some testing and some diet alterations may be suggested, and then the doctor(s) can follow-up to see if things get better.

Need more info: Normal stool color can vary greatly from brown to green to yellow. Yellow can result from a fatty meal, but could also indicate liver/gallbladder disease. Black, maroon, bloody, pale, white, clay colored stools or greasy/foamy/floating/mucus stools are all a cause for concern. Stooling frequency can also vary. More important than the #stools/day is a change in the normal pattern of stooling.

Sometimes: When the gallbladder is removed, the normal storage of bile and excretion in response to meals, is interrupted.  Instead, the liver will constantly make bile and excrete this directly into the GI tract.  Without food present, this can cause irritation of the intestine, causing diarrhea in about 20% of cholecystectomy patients.  This may be yellow, since there may not be accompanying solid stool.
