Depends: On how bad a  fracture or break in the digit and on any damaged soft tissue. There are instances where the affected digit will always remain slightly swollen or larger in appearance than the same digit on the opposite limb.

Difficult to underst: If i'm reading correctly the elderly often take longer to heal after a fracture.  Needs x-ray follow up to see progress and see if its healed or not.

Ligament sprain: You should only start practicing once you're pain and symptom free. If the swelling persists whereas other symptoms are absent, you can try to elevate you foot and use a compression stocking or an ace wrap. You should be able to resume normal daily activity and some strengthening exercises such as range of motion exercises. Also, make sure you use footwear that is protective.

Gout or pseudo gout.: Uric acid levels can be normal in acute exacerbation of gout. You need either Colchicine or a course of steroids and X ray of your foot. Stay away from red meat and shell fish.

Possibly: Fluid can be moved or "pitting".  We call this pitting edema but more common for the legs and feet.  For toes or fingers, it's more difficult to determine but it's possible.
