i have had bad hiccups all day on and off. why?

Bitter Sour Or Sweet: First have you tried to get rid of them? Try holding your breath, licking a lemon,swallowing a teaspoon of sugar or drinking some bitters(not all at once!).Usually what's causing it is nothing serious and will go away in a day or less, but if it lasts longer you won't be a happy camper and should get some medication in the ER or Urgent Care. There are more serious causes, but very rare at your age

Diaphragm: This is a mild spasm of the diaphragm of unknown cause where thankfully it only occurs once and not in a series of multiple hiccups in your case.

One's Dr. can check: It is not known why people get hiccups. Babies start getting hiccups even before they are born. Hiccups are not harmful, and they stop on their own. There is no sure way to stop hiccups, although people have tried techniques such as: drinking water, holding one's breath, getting scared, putting sugar on the tongue, etc... Medication is only used in non-stop cases that interfere with one's life.

: It is not uncommon to have hiccups, and they are usually related to acid reflux or to a gastrointestinal illness. Initially, I would treat them with over-the-counter antacids. If your symptoms remain persistent for more than a few days, however, I would speak to your primary care doctor. Good luck.

Only if it: Never stops. You have some irritation of the diaphragm. Try any of the old fold remedies like holding your breath. If they persist, there is medication which can usually stop them, but it's rarely needed.

See your doctor: Occasional hiccups are normal for everyone but daily might be a sign of something more serious.  This occurs if something irritates the diaphragm a muscle which controls your breathing.

This needs to be: Medically evaluated.  
Any underlying medical problems would need to be addressed. Chronic hiccups can be addressed through medications or acupuncture.

Hiccups: Most likely gas in stomach. Try this if your Dr approves.

Fill a large plastic glass with water. Go to bathtub of shower or sink.  Drink the full glass of water while from the side of the glass away from you by leaning a long way over.
