Oral herpes: Herpes simplex virus type 1 (HSV1) infection is extremely common; up to half of all people in the US have it. Most infections cause few or no symptoms, but many get recurrent oral herpes ("cold sores", usually blister- or pimple-like, usually on lips, around nose, etc). Canker sores in the mouth are not cold sores and not herpes. A blood test can detect HSV1, but it's not perfect -- misses 30%.

Possible: Statistically one out of three people have the herpes virus.  Not everyone develops lesions.  It is very difficult to determine when someone has contracted the virus.

Herpes ?'s: Oral or vaginal herpes is easily transmitted, but usually requires contact with mucosal surfaces (male urethra or lips/mouth), so just a skin contact may not transmit herpes I or II.  Most individuals have contact at some point with herpes, and its development into open sores depends on stress, either nutritional, emotional or job/school related. Get a serum test from your MD if sores occur.

No way to know: There is no such thing as "outbreak w/o sores". If there are no sores, it's not an outbreak. However, the virus can be present without symptoms, and can be transmissible to a sex partner (asymptomatic shedding of the virus). There is no way to know when this happens; it's random. Do you know your virus type? Asymptomatic shedding is far more often with HSV2 than HSV1.

: It's rare. At any point in time, probably under one person in a million has herpetic whitlow. Your massage worker almost certainly didn't have it. And there has never been a report of HSV infection transmitted by massage, with or without whitlow (not counting cases when the massage turned sexual with herpes transmitted by kissing, intercourse, or oral sex). This isn't anything to be worried about.

Not usually: Sores caused by herpes virus usually would cause some discomfort - burning, numbing, and/or tingling. If in doubt, I recommend seeing a doctor for evaluation.
