Testing: A herpes viral culture can determine if a rash is due to the herpes virus.  A doctor can perform this if there is an active lesion.  If there is no active lesion, a blood test can be performed to determine if there are antibodies against any recent or past herpes infection.

No, but,: Herpes simplex 1 & herpes simplex 2 are distinct viruses. You cannot get hsv2 from someone who only has hsv1, but you can get hsv1 in the genital area or hsv2 around the mouth. It is possible to have hsv 1 & 2 both in either the oral area or the gential area.

: Yes.  Beside oral sex, incidental autoinnoculation plays a role as well.  Almost one half of genital herpes in US are caused by Herpes type 1.

Perhaps: More than likely if it's recurrent and painful sores on lips +/- skin around the lips, it's herpes simplex- type 1. It is a reactivation virus that becomes quiescent or inactive but virus is still dormant and can recur especially under circumstances of stress - creams like abreva or Denavir (penciclovir) decrease the pain + length of time sores are present but no cure available.

Like a cold sore: It looks like an ulcer. It hurts and burns.  Similar to how a cold sore appears on your lip.  Any mucous membrane can be affected including your tongue.

A miserable issue: For sure. Canker: discontinue toothpaste that has sodium lauryl sulfate, limit acidic foods and try to avoid trauma of oral tissues w toothbrush/utensils.  Look for zilactin products in pharmacy to apply. Best medicine is rx steroid in an oral bandage delivery called "orabase".  Lasers can help if your dentist has one.

Could be: But could also be a hundred other things.  Make an appointment with your Dentist for the lesion to be examined.

Different animals...: Canker sores aren't to be confused with cold sores (which result from herpes virus).  Canker sores are not viral, and they are not infectious - they are similar to other immune type reactions, such as dermatitis, etc, and  are frequently related to stress (local or systemic).  The lesion on your lip would more likely be a cold sore, and your tongue is a more typical place to get a canker sore.
