Definition provided: Hepatic abscess means that there is a pus cavity in the liver.  The causes for this can be multiple, including bacteria and/or fungus coming from part of the intestine (such as diverticulitis), from a blocked bile duct, or seeding through the bloodstream from a distant infection.  Hepatic abscesses often present with fevers, occasionally right upper quadrant pain, abnormal liver function tests.

Complicated: Small (one cm or less) abscesses can be treated medically.  Larger abscesses may require surgical drainage (interventional radiologists often do this).  The choice of antibiotics is based on the organisms likely to be present, and my choice would be to treat this intravenously rather than orally, but there are doctors whose opinions differ.

Liver abscesses need to be treated with drainage and antibiotics.
