A cardiac MRI looks : At your heart muscle, sometimes arteries to the heart and can calculation left ventricular mass or ejection fraction.  It can see regurgitant jets.  It is usually done if your echocardiogram is inconclusive or you might have a cardiac mass.

Palpitations: Palpitations have many causes from anxiety through anatomic and physiologic abnormalities. The feeling of bounding usually relates to the volume of blood pumped with each palpitation. There is no simple single answer for the question. If you're bothered by the feeling should consult a dr. To see if the problem can be clarified.

Out of the field: Cardiac mr is centered on the heart. You may see on the border of the field partial breast tissue, but cardiac mr is not dedicated to breast. It is not the same exam, no the same protocol. Palpation and mammogram are the best. If something shows on the cardiac mr, then do mammogram.

No good: Cardiac MRI doesn't reliably see the coronary arteries because the coronaries are moving and MRI takes time to acquire its images.

Accepted Answer

Yes: It's possible that breast cancer could be detected on a heart mri, depending on whether the breasts were included in the images. However, the radiologist reading the heart MRI is not looking for breast cancer, so even if it's there it's very likely to be missed.  But if a radiology report mentions a breast abnormality, your doctor needs to know right away!

at different times over the past 2 years on both my brain and heart mri there has been noted "chronic microvascular disease" changes. what is this?

Tiny artery disease: Micro vascular disease is inside matrix changes with decrease blood flow in tiny arteries effecting brain, heart and kidneys. Also known arteriosclerosis  and different from large blood vessel disease[atherosclerosis]with no plaques. Causes are blood pressure, diabetes, cholesterol, uric acid, arthritis, poly cystic ovary. Effects;mini stroke, angina, heart attack and kidney failure. Treat the disease.

i have a 30-40% rate of pvcs (begeminal) per a 24-hour heart holter but a stress echo showed normal. is a heart mri needed?

PVCs: A normal stress echo suggests that your heart is structurally and functionally normal within the limits of the test. An MRI could possibly show something that the echo images didn't but not a high likelihood. Hormonal and non imageable possibilities also exist. The normal stress echo suggests low risk to the PVCs. Discuss with your cardiologist.

will a heart mri detect breast cancer?

Accepted Answer

Unlikely: Breast MRI is a very sensitive test for breast cancer detection, using special software and thousands of images to be effective.  An MRI of the heart, not unlike a ct scan, can serendipitously find an abnormality in the breast but, since it is not specifically "looking" for breast abnormalities, would be less reliable than a simple mammogram or ultrasound.
