Hearing Heartbeat: there is no danger in being able to hear ones heartbeat.  Most of the time this occurs when laying down or getting ready to sleep.

Turbulent flow: Anything that is obstructing your flow and cause turbulence can explain this. Not common but can
- Location of stenosis (coarctation of the aorta)
- Aortic Stenosis
- HOCM
etc

recently started hearing heartbeat (not a whoosh but a beat) in my head when lying down. stronger sound when lying on left side. what is causing this?

Could be nothing: But could be a symptom of carotid artery stenosis. Not to panic. Tell your doctor about it and let them listen to your neck for a bruit. They might order ultrasound of your neck to look at the carotid arteries as well, a non-invasive, not scary test.

Normal blood flow.: You're probably hearing the blood flowing through blood vessels in the ear area.  When you have your ear on a pillow or mattress, you're blocking out environmental noises, so the normal noises of circulation become audible.

See a physician: This could be a number of different things, from effects of medication to dehydration to cardiovascular issues.  The best way to evaluate is to be seen by a physician who can examine and understand the circumstances of your symptoms in detail.

Look into: You should have your blood pressure checked. The elevated pressure can cause headaches as well as a pulsating sound in the ears.

: If the sensation is a steady beat you're experiencing pulsatile tinnitus. It's usually not a serious issue but sometimes it's associated with high blood pressure or increased pressure within the brain. If it doesn't resolve after a prolonged and/or heavy period, I recommend having an evaluation&amp; being advised by an ENT specialist &amp; having your blood pressure checked. Also get checked for anemia.

Likely noncaddiac: Normal heart beats can frequently be heard by patients when they lie on their side or ear. It's a common complaint i hear in the office. We title it "cardiac awareness". Uncertain why it manifests itself to patients when it does. I suspect this is not a cardiac abnormality. Headaches obviously shouldn't be treated lightly. Common allergies on up to more important organic causes may be responsible.

High blood pressure: Normally one doesn't hear their own heartbeat. However sound travels in the direction of (blood) flow &amp; the only way it gets amplified is if there is more. That happens frequently (but not most of the time) with high blood pressure, or hypertension (also known as the silent killer, but perhaps u r lucky it's not silent in your case). See a doctor, get your blood pressure checked during an episode.

Conductive?: The carotid artery and jugular vein travel in close proximity to your inner ear.  When the conduction mechanism bringing sound from outside to your inner ear is impaired, the internal sounds, such as your heartbeat, gets amplified. Thus, you hear your heartbeat.
