Possibly. : It really depends on how hard you are actually hitting yourself. My bigger concern is that you are doing that at all to manage your anger. Yes: Depending on the degree of impact and transmitted force, you can lose consciousness, a concussion; have just a localized bruise over the scalp or even have a traumatic brain injury that affects memory and emotions.  Repetitive head injury builds up, e.g., football and hockey players who develop "post-traumatic encephalopathy".

You: Either have clinical evidence of brain damage or you don't. If you aren't sure of your neurological status please see a neurologist for an evaluation.

Unlikely: Absent loss of consciousness, seizures, arm/leg weakness, altered vision, persistent severe post traumatic headaches, you likely will have no ill effects. It actually takes fairly hard trauma to the head to hurt someone your age.

Concussion: Any injury to the head causes loss of brain cells, the question is how many - and this is usually proportional to the severity of the head injury. A minor bump to the head usually damages very few (if any) brain cells. If you have symptoms of worsening headache, loss of consciousness, weakness, speech deficit, seizures, drowsiness etc, see a doctor.

i was physically abused for 6 years of my marriage. i was hit in the head a lot and my memory and such seems impaired. could it be from brain damage

Maybe not?: Certainly repetitive head trauma can cause problems but what if there is something else going on too?  You would not want to miss that "something else".  Seek care with your doctor and preferably a specialist for concussion.

: Which is it ? A light hit or near penetrating the skull ? The brain is covered by a thick skull and several membranes that mimic bubble wrap. Any hit that does not cause loss of consciousness or memory is unlikely to do damage.

got hit in the back of the head  with a foam dodgeball 10 hours ago. no severe headache.  still need to be concerned about brain damage?

No knockout/no pbm: The trauma that knocks you out, even briefly, has produced a concussion. This frequently includes short term memory loss, dizziness & nausea & headaches. If the trauma wasn't enough to cause even brief loss of function is unlikely to ever yield brain damage. Headaches, dizziness, nausea & vomiting may indicate you had more of a hit than you remember( memory loss is a sign of concussion).

No: The symptoms you describe are those of a head injury not a brain injury.

Accepted Answer

Not likely: I would not expect a foam dodgeball to cause brain damage. If he has had a concussion it should be apparent and he should show some signs of impaired thinking or memory and pain. Usually following head trauma we watch for a significant change in personality or demeanor in the next 24 hours. If he has to change in his mood or an increase in pain then see the emergency room.
