Cough drop over dose: Usually cough drops are over the counter and mild in strength with recommended dosages from their packaging label. However too much of anything can be bad so stick to recommended doses. If coughing is still problematic consider another remedy such as a tablespoon of honey (one study showed efficacy from Buckwheat honey equivalent to prescription narcotic suppressants). Don't give honey to infants.

Get a checkup !: Cough is a symptom of throat and possibly lung problems.  If you have a persistent cough, it could be simply related to allergy drainage or acid reflux.  An examination by a throat specialist can identify the cause of the cough and then treatments will avoid the need for cough drops.  The key is to deal with the cause, not the treatment!

Options: Hydrate well.   Consider using a warm air vaporizer. Mix several teaspoons of honey into herbal tea  with a squeeze of lemon juice.  Or make tea with 2 tsp of marshmallow root bark per 1cup of hot water (steep in a covered pot for at least 5 minutes).  Drink several times a day or as needed to relieve coughing. See a physician if your cough is not resolving, difficulty breathing or temp &gt; 104.
