Seldom the cause: Despite all the "pop" stuff you'll find on the internet, vitamin deficiency is seldom the cause of hair loss. People are just trying to sell you stuff. An inexpensive multiple vitamin daily is usually more than enough if you're eating sensibly. Look for some other cause -- male pattern baldness, hypothyroidism, alopecia areata, seborrhea, fungus, telogen effluvium.

does vitamin a lower vitamin d levels? i once used topical tretinoin for acne which led to hair loss. my vitamin d levels were borderline deficient at the time. was this because of the tretinoin? will supplementing vitamin d help my hair loss?

: Topical applications of creams or lotions do not produce blood kevels of the agent that would interfere with the blood content of  anything. Vitamin D deficiency is associated with numerous health problems but I don't recall hair loss as one of them. It is reasonable to assume it might.

Lots of reasons: Go see your family doc and even get a referral to a dermatologist specializing in hair loss. First, remember that stress can lead to hair loss. Child birth & hospitalization are classic causes of stress but so is surgery. Hair eventually comes back several months later. Thyroid disease can do this too. So can too much testosterone & its derivative, dihydrotestosterone. So get tested and see derm.
