A few ideas: Common reasons for breakthrough bleeding include, hormone fluctuations, losing or gaining weight (being too heavy/too thin), stress, thyroid, to name a few.  The most common reason is hormonal changes. Not uncommon: Should return back to normal by your next cycle. If you think you may be pregnant, please get tested. If you suspect that your  partner has an infection try to see a gynecologist ASAP

Normal: Normal menstrual cycles are from 21 to 35 days long. It is perfectly reasonable therefore for you to have had two periods in a month, which could just as well be your body's reaction to some factor/change in your life as well. No concern unless you are also anemic.

Irregular periods: Irregular periods are very common. If you normally have regular periods and then suddenly have one that is early or late this usually gets better on its own with cycles returning to normal over the next few months.  If you are not wanting to be pregnant you should discuss birth control which will also help with cycle control.

Once a year?: A woman with cycles shorter than 29 days (shorter than 1 month) will likely have 1 ovulation per month during the year, but have 2 ovulations during one month of the year (since she has about 13 cycles a year). That means all such women will have 2 periods in one of the months of each year, in order to have 13 cycles each year.

Irregular periods: Irregular periods are one of the most common problems obgyns treat. If this is one time problem it usually resolves on its own. If this is a recurring problem you should be evaluated. Infections &  hormonal changes can cause spotting. If there is a concern for pregnancy then do  a home pregnancy test .  There are many options available to help regulate the menstrual cycle. Schedule a visit.

Hard to say: A normal menstrual cycle (from the first day of one period to the next period) lasts 21 to 35 days. It is normal to bleed for up to seven days.  Bleeding in between the two periods is considered abnormal. But if you have short cycles, it is entirely possible to have 2 periods over the course of a calendar month.  If you are having abnormal, excess bleeding, you should see your gyn doc.

Possible: If you have had unprotected sexual intercourse it is a possibility. It is possible to have bleeding or cycles during the first 3-4 weeks of pregnancy. Although it is doubtful, consider a home pregnancy test and monitor your monthly cycles.
