can i give my 18 month old a chest congestion medicine? (guaifenesin) she had an ear infection and is done with that now this bad mucus cough!

OTC cold meds: Most over the counter cough and cold preparations in the children's section are FDA approved for children aged 2 years and older.  Guaifenesin is generally regarded as safe as long as not combined with other medications such as decongestants or cough suppressants.  These medications do not treat the illness, they mask the symptoms to promote comfort and rest.

Non specific: Not sure what the question really is, but if you are talking about upper respiratory tract or head cold symptoms due to infection versus if they are do to allergies, allergic symptoms tend to occur with exposure to kn own or suspected triggers, would not have fever, or sore throat, infections would be more likely to have fever, sore throat, no clear allergic exposure etc.

Depends : Afrin will give you instant relief but rebound is big concern. If the infection has resolved, use of nasal steroids and nasal saline may help.

Allergic rhinitis: You could possibly have allergies. Try allegra, Claritin (loratadine) or zyrtec for relief, otherwise see your doctor.

No: Seek the help of an allergist.  Allegra d is different than Mucinex (guaifenesin) dm, but you should learn what you are allergic to to help avoid symptoms.

Cannot diagnose: Sounds as if you should go and see a doctor and have this fully evaluated.  This cannot be done over the internet, but you are sufficiently ill to warrant a detailed exam and perhaps some imaging studies and tests. Good luck.

If congestion is your major symptom, something such as pseudephedrine (sudafed) will work better. The two ingredients are often found together in the same medicine(mucinex (guaifenesin) d).

It works by thinning the mucus in the air passages to make it easier to cough up the mucus and clear the airways. See your doctor to decide if your cough is upper (post nasal drip) vs. Lower respiratory-?Asthma.
