Help cartilage: They are the building blocks of normal cartilage. If you can take them in a form that you can absorb thru your GI tract there is some research that shows that 1500 mg + in divided doses can decrease joint pain from arthritic joints. Read book "cure for arthritis" details many of the studies. Studies are on going, vets have been using it for years on dogs with good success.

No evidence !: These substances are not preservatives.  Used for arthritis problems, primarily osteoarthritis. I, as are many others, skeptical of there benefit.  Nonethless, they are not preservatives.  Gin is!

Lack of evidence: There is no hard conclusive evidence that they work. Anecdotes do not count. However, if the diagnosis is osteoarthritis, especially of the knee or shoulder, i usually have patients give glucosamine a three month trial as glucosamine is very safe (unless shellfish allergy). If it does work, it works within three months. Less problems than with prescription medications.

: All laboratory results need to be interpreted in the clinical context and the doctor who ordered the tests is usually in the best position to do that. Talk to the doctor who ordered the tests. Having said that, Glucosamine chondroitin intake is not expected to affect AST. You need to look into other ingredients in the pill. If you take alcohol, that would be an explanation. See below: I have not seen much in the way of side effects with these supplements.  A while back there was some speculation that glucosamine might raise the blood sugar in diabetics but this has not been the case. Like any medication or supplement, anyone can have side effects.

Mild side effects: Glucosamine is an amino sugar that is often taken as a nutritional supplement for arthritis.  In several large clinical trials the side effects were mild and infrequent consisting of constipation, stomach ache, rash and hives.  Since glucosamine is often made from the shells of crustaceans there is a theoretical risk of an allergic reaction for those with seafood allergies, but is rarely seen.

The studies are hit: Or miss with glucosamine for joints overall, and discs are a difficult area to get nutrients to, so they may not be able to get much from glucosamine. That being said, some people really do have good results. It is a benign treatment that may actually help a great deal if you are one of the lucky few!
