i stopped breathing before i fell asleep when i was given general anaesthetic, when i was a child, is this normal?

Yes: The anesthesiologist was, no doubt, carefully monitoring your respirations - that's what they do! and would have or did assist your breathing had it been necessary. Anesthetics often suppress breathing so it's neither rare nor unexpected. Remember, you can suspend breathing for several minutes, especially at rest, without irreversible damage.

When to eat?: Your doc or his nurse should have given you instructions on when to eat. The main principle is that once you are passing stool go for it!

Hard to say: Ususally, the numbess doesn to last for more than an hour or two, b ut it depends on the type of anesthesia your surgeon administered. Some will last 12+ hours.

Give your surgeon a call in the morning if you are still numb and explain your situation.

Sore throat: Have you gone back for a post-op exam? Check back with your surgeon about the sore throat, which may or may not be related to the surgery.

Yes: The breathing tube placement may have caused a little irritation in your throat.  This is normal and should resolve within 24 hours.  If it does not or gets worse or you develop a fever call your surgeon and also speak with the anesthesiologist.

GA: Nitrous Oxide was discovered by  Joseph Priestly in 1772. But, it was Humphry Davy who discovered that inhaling it inhibited pain. There were nitrous 'parties' and 'exhibitions' where people would inhale it and do stupid and sometimes painful things. In 1840, a dentist (Horace Wells) used it to deaden pain while pulling molars. The combination of the nitrous gas and opium made a reasonable GA.
