Agree look at: Most likely a hernia, but could be testicular cancer, etc.  Agree with a physical examination to direct further investigation and therapy.  If a hernia may or may not need surgery.

Lymph node: The body has a series of strainers called lymph nodes that sift through stray fluids in the body &amp; take out germs and other debris.You likely have &amp; have had something going on with that leg,a series of bug bites or a sore, that led to the enlargement. These usually enlarge &amp; shrink over 3-4 wks. If this has gone on 5 wks you may want your doc to confirm the process.

Not necessarily: That is one possibility but less likely given that it hurts. It may be a hernia or an enlarged lymph node that may just be from a skin or other infection in the area. Check with your doctor to further evaluate this, especially if it does not improve over a little time. If pain is severe, go to the emergency room as may be a trapped hernia which should be addressed right away.

? new  ?? not new: Many times a person finds "new things" on her body when something else is going on that focuses new attention there such as starting a workout program.This lump may have been there a long time. It is most likely related to a previous or current skin infection in the vulvar/pelvic area. Make sure you don't have current signs of infection,apply moist heat, see doc if lump persists after 7-10 days.

Time to see Dr.: It depends on age, history (injury? trauma? sexually active? hernia history? abdominal surgery history?....) Unless size of an olive or smaller--which might be a lymph node--it is not normal and should be evaluated. His Dr is good place to start to help determine who to see or what imaging needs done next.

A lymph node: Most often when parents find a small lump in the groin of a child, the lump will represent a lymph node.  Lymph nodes essentially are the bodies trash cans and can get bigger with a recent illness.  Groin nodes will respond especially to diarrhea type illnesses.  However, lumps here can also represent other issues such as a hernia and should be looked at be your doctor to be certain.
