However, sometimes, the lining doesn't obey the central instructions, and begins to grow on its own. This is called hyperplasia. It can be simple, complex or atypical. The latter is a precursor to cancer.

What did your gynsay: Obviously someone diagnosed it so that gyn should have told u what type of hyperplasia it is as there are different types, some can be reversed with Progesterone and some need your uterus removed, if it was just diagnosed on ultrasound, it may or may not really be hyperplasia so I do in office hysteroscopy and biopsy and or D&C  to see if it is really hyperplasia or not and then it can be treated.

Likely yes.: The therapy for this can be hormonal with continuous or cyclic progestin therapy to stop the hyperplasia, or hysterectomy.  So there are times when hysterectomy is not done.  Having said that, if one has too many instances of this, hysterectomy might ultimately be required in many more cases.

D&C vs hysterectomy: Endometrial hyperplasia can cause bleeding, and possibly lead to cancer.  One effective treatment is hysterectomy, which also allows for thorough pathology examination to be sure there is no cancer already present.  Other treatments to avoid hysterectomy include a thorough D&C to remove the abnormal endometrial lining, and possibly hormonal treatments. Your gyn can discuss what is optimal for you.

Yes: Simple endometrial hyperplasia without atypia  should respond to cyclic progesterone.

No: Endometrial hyperplasia may have irregular or heavy vaginal bleeding especially in post or peri menopausal women. Endometriosis will often have pelvic pain and painful intercourse as symptoms.
