Often 1-2 days: Usually one set of microscopic slides is prepared right away and a second set is prepared using a different method overnight. Your pathologist will look at both sets the next day. Often a diagnosis can be made then (about 1 day), although if additional tests need to be performed on the sample to confirm the diagnosis, it may add another day or so. The report usually goes to your doctor first.

Precancerous: The fine needle aspiration you had showed there was only a suspicion of thyroid cancer. The thyroid tissue removed likely has precancerous tissue and needed to come out but is not fully characteristic enough to give it a diagnosis of cancer.

Unlikely: When a thyroid fna shows carcinoma, it is virtually certain that the subsequent surgical specimen will also.  You ought to have the surgery as soon as possible.  Delay only allows a greater chance for metastatic spread to other body sites.

No: I wouldn't accept the diagnosis without cytogenetics and maybe flow cytometry in the absence of at least a core tissue biopsy.

Pretty much: Accurate histopathologic evaluation of lymphomas requires a tissue biopsy, preferably an intact lymph node. Fnas suggesting the presence of a lymphoma should be followed up with a definitive tissue biopsy. Some centers use fna as an initial screening test to determine if the patient's lymphadenopathy is a benign reactive form. The accurate diagnosis of lymphoma based on fna is not possible.

Tiny fragment: Think of a few fine droplets containing tiny cells, so delicate that the naked eye cannot say solid or liquid. It is examined with great care, and the microscope shows rich detail and color.

Sampling: Radiologist can try to ensure that the needle aspiration is done from the lesion. Pathologist can read individual cells and tell if the cells are benign or malignant. If the pathologist finds malignant cells, the diagnosis is definitive. If malignant cells are not seen, it may be because there is no cancer or that cancer cells were not aspirated by the needle.

Generally safe: Fine needle aspirations are generally safe. They involve one or more passes of a needle through an area that is to be sampled. I assume that this is in the lung fields are not on the chest wall. One potential complication is called a pneumothorax where air can get introduced into the space between the long and the chest wall.

Your doctor can expl: If you ask, your doctor will be happy to explain. Fna is a very thin needle used to do a biopsy. Trucut is a larger bore needle biopsy which yields more tissue than  a fna does, so it provides a better diagnostic yiled of tumor tissue. Eus is simple a way of endoscopic ultrasound guidance from inside the intestine (colon in your case).
