Many options: The first period is often a little off but it should not be a “hemorrhage.” If you are bleeding that heavy then prompt evaluation is needed. There are many options for heavy periods. Many birth control methods can be used to lighten or even stop the cycle.

They are back: Your periods have resumed and for the first few months may take on the bright red color as the lining of the womb is doing post baby/breast feeding 'housecleaning'.

Issues?: Maybe a heavy first period...Or retained products of conception/placenta.  Get an ultrasound for a check.

: See your OB physician for an exam and other testing.  Retained placenta or membranes can cause post-partum bleeding, and if pregnancy is possible, an HCG test can confirm.

Yes: Irregular bleeding is not an uncommon occurrence after pregnancy, especially if  breastfeeding is involved.  With the micronor (norethindrone) (progesterone only pill) your bleeding should decrease in amount and duration.

Yes: At 6 weeks postpartum, it's possible that this dark black discharge is old blood left from delivery, or it's possible that it's a period as well.  If you are breastfeeding exclusively, then more likely it's lochia left from delivery.  If you are not breastfeeding, then the blood could be a period.  Most important, it's possible to get pregnant at 6 wks postpartum. Hope that helps!

Your hormones are: in flux for some reason.  Many factors affect the normal flow of periods including age, season, weather, stress, exercise, body girth, nutrition, etc.  I would wait until the period returns and see if the next cycle brings regularity. Irregular bleeding: Irregular periods are one of the most common problems obgyns treat. If this is one time problem it usually resolves on its own. If this is a recurring problem you should be evaluated. Infections &amp;  hormonal changes can cause spotting. If there is a concern for pregnancy then do  a home pregnancy test .  There are many options available to help regulate the menstrual cycle. Schedule a visit.
