Very well: They be walking the next day. Pain is worse in the first 24-72 hrs.  Get up and walk, deep breath every 5 minutes.  You could out if hospital in 5 days if all goes well.  Is possible.

Probably chemotherap: The fact that your father needed to have all the colon removed tells me that his cancer was multiple or he had many polyps in the non-affected area of the cancer. Chemotherapy is indicated by the type of cancer, the grade of spread  to lymph node, liver or lung. Radiotherapy is indicated for rectal cancer. Age of the patient and health condition are relevant for the indication of chemotherapy.

Call your surgeon: How long ago was the surgery? Diarrhea early after surgery is common. Drink plenty of liquids. Add metamucil 3 times a day to the diet. Ask tthe surgeon if immodium can be used or not to slow the bowels.

my mom is having half of her colon removed in the morning and her dr. would also like to prevent ovarian cancer by removing her ovaries. is that good?

Probably unnecessary: Unless there is a genetic syndrome, there would be no role for this.  Maybe it would be appropriate to do a ct scan of the abdomen and pelvis first.  However, i would not recommend the ovaries to be removed.  Hope this helps.

Change of habits: Removing a segment of colon will not  severely  effect your bowel movements , most likely since surgery you are eating more fibre , besides large bm is better getting constipated.

Hard to Say: She should probably be seen by her doctor.  Is this a new symptom? It is hard to know without more detail and further investigation, but she may be having a problem completely unrelated to her history of cancer such as gastritis, reflux, or ulcer disease, or she may be having an issue related to a recurrence.

Essential: The only way colon cancer can be cured is by colectomy with removal of adjacent lymph nodes.  The primary lesion is polyclonal  and continues to produce subsets each capable of a different path of metastasis.  If there is a liver or lung lesion they are clonal and cant spread. Leaving a primary can in time result in different paths of spread that may be uncontrollable.

i was diagnosed with colon cancer & had a hemi colectomy.  oncology recommended that i go for preventative chemotherapy.  is there any alternative preventative care available if i choose not to go for chemo? anything that would boost my immune system

No: There is no effective way to boost the immune response to deal with residual colon cancer, if any. You should follow your doctor's advise.

: All depends on many other things like his general health, co morbidities, grade of tumor. It is very difficult to predict. Wish him/her a long survival and good health.
