Exam needed: It is possible you fractured a bone when you fell on your elbow. In order to properly evaluate this problem you should go to a medical clinic where a complete history and physical will be done. X-rays of your arm may than be ordered by the physician there. See a doctor: For children I suggest you get a physician to examine him. Its important, they are not able to express themselves. Better safe.

Head injury: Use ice packs to the back of his head to limit swelling. If he cried immediately and now is fine, you can just observe at home. If he were to start vomiting, not acting fine (nonsense speech, balance issues, daytime sleepiness with difficult arousal etc) then get him evaluated immediately. If he goes all day without issue then waking him at night is not necessary.

Head Pain: I would go to an er right away unless your internist can refer you right away to a neurologist. They can make a diagnosis.

Not a wive's tale: Depending upon how you land and the predisposition of your spine it is certainly possible to fracture your neck skull or even mid back. It doesn't happen often but is not unheard of.

: Your brain uses inputs from your vision to make minor adjustments in balance continuously. These inputs require some light to function. In a dark room setting you can easily be off balance from the lack of these adjustments. I can easily see where the inconsistent and abrupt change in lighting could throw you balance off in that setting. If this happens a lot, go see your doc.
