Congestion: I'd recommend using an OTC decongestant as long as you don't have any blood pressure problems.  Also, using an OTC antihistamine would be beneficial.  Warm salt water gargles.  Sinus rinses also help.  Using a humidifier.  Hope this helps.

Nothing!!!: There are no medications that will definitively "cure"congestion. Etiology is usually viral or allergic and treatment is usually fluids, making the child comfortable (with a cold). You can also try a decongestant but that, like tylenol, (acetaminophen) is only for symptomatic relief--meaning that the congestion will return when the decongestant wears off. An antihistamine can be used if allergy is the cause.

Supportive care: THe best thing to do initially is hydrate with non caffeinated fluids, Tylenol (acetaminophen) for aches and pains, something like Mucinex to thin secretions but if you develop a fever aches and productive cough see a doctor.

Sinus disease: Many commercials lead one to believe that all facial pain is sinusitis. Not all nasal obstruction is sinusitis nor all patients with findings on imaging like MRI or ct has the disease as well. There are many good treatments for nasal obstruction and facial pain and even sinusitis but you should find an otolaryngologist and neurologist you trust and seek their opinion about the cause and rx for you.

Cure ?????: Since the nasal passages are lined with sensitive tissue, it can and will swell in response to respiratory irritants and a variety of infectious agents. Congestion is most noticeable when infants have a small head/nose/nasal passages and are not yet mouth breathing. This improves with head growth, but any child will have recurrent  nasal congestion when conditions set it off.

Side effects: There are side effects with almost every medication you take-over the counter and prescription. Difficult to predict who will experience them and to what extent. Taking the medication as directed can decrease the likelihood in some instances but never any guarantees. Sometimes it's a matter of do the side effects make you feel worse than the medication makes you feel better. Good luck!
