Hormones interact: No direct effect but all  hormones interact.  You need to be more specific in what are your concerns

Hormone replacement.: If a person is going to take hormone replacement therapy, we often would continue that for life.  The whi study changed the vast majority of doctor's opinions about hormone replacement and many don't prescribe it at all any more.  The negative feelings about replacing hormones is changing back to the former opinion slowly where nearly all women were replaced for life.

Estrogen: Will not normally thicken the lining while taking continuous Progesterone at appropriate doses.

Accepted Answer

Pill switch: First I don't recommend a pill break between packs.  Go from one pack to the new one.  Anytime you change pills I recommend a condom back up at least the first month.

Doesn't seem to: Hormone therapy seems to have little or no effect on cognitive function. Estrogen + progestin or estrogen alone are not recommended for women at any age to prevent cognitive decline. Hormone therapy appears to increase the risk of dementia when started in women who are 65 or older.

i am a 43 yo non smoker with an ovarian cyst. which pill is best a pop or estrogen/progestin? or are there other options?thank you.

All are fine: Ovarian cysts are common and while they are more frequently associated with progestin only pills, if you are healthy any of these options ( including a nuvaring, nexplanon, iud, as well) are fine. The best birth control option is the one that you feel comfortable with, tolerate, and you will use correctly. Good luck.

my birthcontrol is 0.15 progestin with 0.03 estrogen. there is the last week were its only estrogen only with 0.01. can i get pregnant off that week?

You can get pregnant: if you have missed pills and even while on very low dose pills: there is no guarantee that all BC pills will prevent all pregnancies. I suggest using condoms for the next 3 weeks in addition to low dose pills.

you be better off with a lower estrogen pill or a different

Possible: It is possible to have less symptoms or side effects with lower dose of hormones but there is still the risk if you symptoms are due to the birth control.  The only thing you can do is discuss with your doctor and try lower formulation of estrogen for different progestin but there is no guarantee.

Both: The majority of birth control pills have both estrogen and Progesterone in them.   There are a few that contain just progesterone.  Progesterone only birth control pills are less commonly used except in special circumstances, such as while breast-feeding, or in women who can't take estrogen.

Individualized: Nuvaring has a low incidence of cardiovascular risk overall. Individuals must be assessed by their doctor to determine if they are a candidate for any form of hormonal contraception. In general the Estrogen in combined contraceptives represent the higher risk hormone.
