Sometimes cancer: Can spread to liver.  Typically cancers that occur (primary site) in GI tract, such as colon, stomach, etc, spread to regional lymph nodes and then to liver.  But cancers from other sites, such as breast, prostate, lung, skin, and really any organ, can spread to liver.  If the cancer starts in the liver and spread to other organs, it can be metastatic liver cancer too.

Possible, not likely: Cancer metastatic to the liver or liver cancer metastatic to other sites usually heralds incurable disease.  Occasionally a solitary metastatic lesion the liver may be resected and if the primary lesion has bee successfully treated, it may afford the possibility of a cure.  Even less often, liver transplant along with removal of the primary lesion may offer cure.

Depends: Liver cancer that has moved to other organs often has a short overall survival.  That being said, there are exceptions.  To find out more, ask your doctor how long between the time the liver cancer and the metastasis was diagnosed, how many metastatic sites are there, and how large are they.  These pieces of information will help answer your question better. Sometimes isolated mets can be removed.

Ask for a referral: It is hard to give good advice without seeing where their tumors are located and whiteout knowing what the pathology is.  There may be options for treatment.  If you haven't been evaluated by a liver surgeon you should ask for a referral.  Many big hospitals or universities have departments specializing in hepatobiliary surgery.

Your : Your best bet would be a cancer program attached to one of the medical schools in chicago, such as northwestern or the university of chicago.  Those facilities are used to managing difficult cases like this and have access to research protocols that may not be available elsewhere.

It's hard to know, without more information, which specialists would be involved in your friend's case.  For example, if there is active, progressive disease in both the liver and lung, and if both sites have been called inoperable, then it will probably be a medical oncologist.  If the disease is stable in one site but progressive in the other, then organ-specific local therapy like radiation, radiofrequency ablation, chemoembolization, radioisotope embolization, and other options may exist. In such cases, the group of doctors might expand to include radiation oncologists, surgeons, and interventional radiologists, among others.

my gran had her eye removed due to ocular melanoma 3 years ago. now metastatic liver cancer, no treatment. no other info given. life expectancy?

Ask her to ask dr.: Liver metastases from any cancer is not a good sign. However depending on many other factors will determine what her life expectancy is, especially knowing what her constitutional health is, her vitality. So, the best answer would be for her to ask her doctor, or see if she'll give you permission to do so (that must be documented in her chart.) also, make sure that her diet is good, and keep her spirit strong.

Listen to your doc: This is grim.  What are her chances of 1 and 5 year survival? Further surgery should be considered in light of these numbers.  What is the importance of quantity versus quality of life?  Your local doc will always be able to answer questions better than us internet docs.

Need evaluation: Hi. The liver needs to be evaluated and if mass is confirmed, it needs to be biopsied. Papillary thyroid cancer is not likely to metastasize to liver, so that history is probably unrelated. You should see a gastroenterologist, and have that questionable liver mass evaluated. metastic liver cancer pt- bilirubin keeps rising but no blocked bile duct . what will happen ?

High bilirubin..: ..in the blood causes jaundice..the yellowish discoloration of the skin, mucous membranes and whites of the eyes. Trying to stall the cancer with chemotherapy is one approach; stenting to bypass a blockage is also done, but apparently not in your case. The main symptom of jaundice is itching treated with antihistamines, cholestyramine, anti-depressants, topicals incl steroids. All the best..
