Otitis: Your technique, while soothing, doesn't address the pathology of either otitis externa or otitis media. A physician should examine  a person who has a significant earache and advise the patient about treatment which may include ear drops and/or antibiotics as well as pain relievers.

Unless : Unless the ear pain and pressure are secondary to a bacterial infection, antibiotic therapy is unlikely to be helpful. We often prescribe antibiotics for persistent complaints beyond a week that may have been initiated by a viral prodrome to prevent secondary superinfection. Keflex, in general, would not be considered the drug of choice for community acquired otitis media. An oral decongestant can assist in relief of nasal, sinus, and mucosal congestive changes leading to eustachian tube dysfunction resulting in ear pain and pressure. Topical afrin is more effective as a decongestant as it works more directly at the target site as long as you respect the 3-5 day maximal useage recommendations to avoid rebound congestion (rhinitis medicamentosa). A heating pad for inflammatory conditions may actually worsen the pain by increasing the firing rate of the nerves carrying the pain impulses.If you continue with ear drainage of the type you are referring i would have the ear examined to rule out sponataneous perforation of the eardrum.

Different things: Depending on duration of pain, try cold compress (less useful if pain longer term), alternating heat and cold compress application, sleeping on your back, getting half an hour aerobic exercise per day, alternating NSAID meds with tylenol, (acetaminophen) avoiding gum chewing or really hard foods, and gentle stretching exercises. If no help from these, see a tmd aware dentist for the next diagnostic steps.

I wouldn't: There are a number of parenting practices passed down through generations that have no value, including this one.Breast milk is a good feed, that's it. It is amazing that so many of us survived these interesting practices.

Yes.: A common cold is also known as an upper respiratory infection (uri).  With a uri, one can experience blockage of the eustachian tube.  This blockage will often result in pain to the ear.  Be sure to see your doctor if you are experiencing these symptoms as permanent hearing loss can occur if there is an untreated ear infection.

To answer your question, it could be a more serious bacterial infection, which could include 'sinus problems.'  while there are viral infections that can cause similar symptoms, we don't typically see the 'common cold' cause significant tonsillar enlargement or pain.
