what is the best thing for a dry flaky scalp?

Dry scalp: Well, first you could certainly try a dandruff shampoo.  Look for something that says "for dry scalp" or other similar statement.  You may need to use it daily for a week or two before you get it under control.  However, if you are black you may not do well with daily shampooing, it may make it worse.  Also scalp psoriasis is some thing to consider.  You may want to see a dermatologist.

Seborrheic Derm: This is a common dermatitis causing a dry scaly and itchy scalp. The shampoos we recommend contain either zinc , selenium , salicylic acid , tar or ketoconazole. Additionally topical steroids in the form of lotions or foams can be helpful.
